Bungie's Destiny: a persistent online 'shared world' FPS

After years of teasing and brief glimpses, Halo

Release Date: 18/02/2013

After years of teasing and brief glimpses, Halo creator Bungie has finally revealed more about its ambitious next project, the mysterious Destiny. There's still much to learn about this intriguing game, but thanks to an official weekend press event, we can at least start to see the shape of the thing.

And that shape looks a lot like a first-person shooter, unsurprisingly. "There's been a lot of rumours that we're working on an MMOFPS, whatever that is, or a social game," Eurogamer reports Bungie's Jason Jones as saying. "The truth is, if you enjoy first-person shooters and you play them on console, Destiny's going to be the best one you've ever played. That's our goal. We've learned our lessons from MMOs. We've learned our lessons from Facebook games. But Destiny is a console first-person shooter. It's the kind of game we love to play and it's the game our fans love to play."

So here's what we know: Destiny takes place on a vast, persistent gameworld with its own weather systems and night and day cycle. That world is always there, filled with other players, even when you're not playing. Because of this, the game requires a constant internet connection - although you'll be perfectly able to experience the whole game solo, the full experience comes when players meet, team up or fight each other.

As well as traditional single player missions, there'll be co-op, competitive and group activities, with something for both casual and hardcore players. "We've always loved co-op at Bungie," Jones said. "Halo 1 was split-screen. But we're making a whole new kind of investment here. Destiny can meet you whatever your mood."

Bungie is still keeping some cards close to its chest, but for now it sounds a lot like the free-roaming co-operative gunplay of Borderlands crossed with the rich, populated virtual environments of World of Warcraft, as spliced together by one of the best FPS studios in gaming history.

Destiny is being developed for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, but no release date has been set.
