Battlefield 4's campaign storyline revealed

China will be the dominant enemy in EA's upcoming shooter sequel, Battlefield 4, the publisher has revealed. The news comes as a synopsis of the game's single player campaign was published on the official EA blog. The spoiler-wary among you may wish to click away now.

"In Battlefield 4, you take on the role of Sergeant Daniel Recker, member of an elite group of soldiers known as Tombstone squad," reads the plot breakdown. "While on a mission to collect intelligence from a defecting Russian General in Baku, Azerbaijan, your squad is discovered and you must fight your way through waves of Russian troops in order to escape."

It then becomes clear that a rogue officer, Admiral Chang, is planning a military coup in China. Russia is prepared to back him up, forming a formidable communist bloc. With the clock ticking, Tombstone Squad is sent to Shanghai to extract VIPs, just as the US is implicated in the assassination of a Chinese dissident and popular civilian leader.

"Admiral Chang has cancelled elections and martial law has been declared," the synopsis continues. "As U.S. and Russian naval forces position themselves off the coast of China, and the situation quickly escalates into a stare down akin to a tinderbox waiting for a spark."

There are even more details of what comes next, including some pretty devastating twists, over at the EA blog. For now, that's more than enough to get us salivating. Battlefield 4's single player mode has been designed to feel closer to the beloved multiplayer, with more use of vehicles and larger, more open environments to fight in.

Battlefield 4 is out on November 1st for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Next gen versions for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will follow soon after.
