Batman returns in Arkham Knight

Rocksteady and publisher Warner Bros have lifted the cowl on the next - and apparently final - game in the Batman Arkham series

Ace British development studio Rocksteady and publisher Warner Bros have lifted the cowl on the next - and apparently final - game in the Batman Arkham series.

Set one year after the events of Arkham City, Batman: Arkham Knight finds Batman facing his most dangerous enemy yet, a new character created exclusively for the game. There will be some familiar faces to punch as well, of course. Scarecrow is the central villain this time, assembling all of Gotham's worst criminals to tighten the screws on Batman. Penguin and Two Face will be part of this plot, along with Harley Quinn. And wherever she goes, there's a good chance the Clown Prince of crime won't be far away.

The most intriguing new feature is the Batmobile. Batman's iconic vehicle will be fully drivable, and can be summoned at any time with a button press. The streets of the openworld Gotham City have been widened to make racing around the town a key part of the gameplay, and the map has also been extended to include a new section of the city not seen in previous games. The Batmobile will be able to jump off ramps, and Batman will be able to eject from the vehicle directly into an offensive dive attack. Windows will be breakable, allowing for spectacularly dramatic entrances.

It will also, sadly, be the last Batman game from Rocksteady. According to game director Jamie Sefton, the game marks "the natural end for the story... we really want to go out in style." Whether Warner Bros will launch a new Batman saga or continue the hugely popular series with another studio - as it did for last year's Arkham Origins - remains to be seen.

Arkham Knight will be available later this year for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC only, so if you've been holding off on that new console you may want to start saving up. Maybe ask Bruce Wayne for a loan. We hear he's loaded.
