9. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League
Genre: Action-adventure Shooter
Developer: Rocksteady Games
Players: 1 - 4
Hear me out - if you’re looking for some casual, run ‘n' gun fun with a couple’ friends by your side, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is the one for you. Featuring fast-paced co-op action and immersive, cinematic scenes, you will be genuinely surprised at how enjoyable it is.
The game is set five years after the events in Batman: Arkham Knight. The planet is under threat from a supreme alien force. It’s up to you and a bunch of friends to put a stop to this planetary threat.
Players have access to all the iconic squad members, and if playing solo, can swap between any of them at any time. Each character has special traversing abilities, which can be useful in different situations. For instance, Deadshot can aim while hovering about on his jetpack. Harley Quinn can aim her weapons while swinging from the Bat-Drone. King Shark can bite through steel with his jaws. Captain Boomerang is the fastest to traverse with due to his Speed Force powers. Each character has its strengths and weaknesses, so you can decide with your friends who gets to play smashy-smashy Shark and who gets to play speedy Captain Boomerang.
Some of the best features that make this game multiplayer-friendly is the cross-platform support that enables players to group up in any format. Better still - Suicide Squad allows for cross-progression, meaning players can sit in their couch and later take their progress into handheld mode with the Nintendo Switch.
As an online live-service game, Suicide Squad is designed to be played online with a squad of up to four players. Squads are encouraged to coordinate and utilise each character’s special abilities to take down boss encounters. If you’re craving some explosive, chaotic action with your best buds, this will satisfy that craving.
8. Gran Turismo 7
Genre: Racing simulator
Developer: Polyphony Digital
Players: 1 - 20
Most will think of Gran Turismo 7 as a single-player racing simulator. However, not many may know that it also has an active online multiplayer mode. Even if racing isn’t your preference, you might want to reconsider GT7. The depth of content, immersive online experience and beginner-friendly mechanics is enough to draw anyone into the racing genre.
For those that aren’t familiar with racing sims, GT7 is surprisingly easy to pick up-and-play due to its assist mechanics. Players have access to Driver Assist Presets, which range from beginner to expert, depending on the level of control they wish to have. These settings greatly help new players ease into the game so they can focus on the action. On the other hand, players who are more experienced can opt out from the Assist Presets and customise the amount of control they have on their racing car.
In terms of competitive online play, GT7 features the Sport Mode - an unlockable mode where every serious competitor worth their salt enters the racetrack feeling like Max Verstappen. Similar to GT Sport, Sport Mode offers loads of race tracks and cars for players to explore. The only caveat to this is that to access Sport Mode, players need to complete a single player campaign.
If you wish to jump straight into multiplayer or local split-screen, players have access to the Multiplayer Pavilion. In this hub, public and private lobbies are regularly hosted, housing up to 20 players in one lobby. This is the perfect place for casual online play, where friends get together and race each other to determine who the real champion is. Grab Gran Turismo 7 now on PS5.
7. No Man’s Sky
Genre: Survival & Space Exploration

Set in a procedurally generated world, there is no shortage of content for players to explore. No Man’s Sky has a lot to offer PS5 gamers from a multiplayer standpoint. Team up with a buddy online to explore a vast universe together. Traverse the cosmos, discover new species of creatures, build bases, and a lot more to keep you and your pals entertained.
As of June 2023, the Interceptor update introduced the arrival of the Space Anomaly Nexus, a central hub for multiplayer activities. It’s basically a massive spaceship where players gather, socialise and trade items.
On the PS5, up to 4 players can team up to complete various missions such as daily Quicksilver missions, encrypted missions and weekend missions. These offer rewards to help you build stronger bases or upgrade your starships. Get No Man's Sky now on PS5.
6. Sonic Superstars
Genre: Side-scrolling Platformer
Developer: Arzest and Sonic Team
Players: 1 - 4
You might be asking yourself, why Sonic Superstars? There are many reasons that make this a strong multiplayer contender. Firstly, there is casual drop-in, drop-out couch multiplayer. Then, there is the online multiplayer Battle Mode, supporting up to 8 players in spectacular races, and best of all, it's set in one of the most iconic universes. What's not to like?
In Battle Mode, 8 players face each other in a variety of mini-games. One of those is Survival. Similar to Fall Guys, players are put to the test in a round where the objective is to be the last one standing. In Race, players compete to get to the finish line while dodging obstacles. In Star Snatcher, players scramble to collect stars, however, if they take damage, a star is lost. Finally, we have Zap Scrap where players shoot projectiles at each other and earn points.
In this side-scrolling adventure, you will be surprised at how much fun it is to pick up a controller and play against your friends with the likes of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy. Each character features unique abilities and playstyles. Perfect for a games night-in with the gang. Get it now on PS5.
5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III
Genre: First-person Shooter
Developer: Sledgehammer Games
Players: 1 - 4
The twentieth instalment of the Call of Duty series remains as popular as ever with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. Why is it so popular? There’s a huge array of game modes with a strong, competitive scene and a loyal fanbase. There’s a reason why Sledgehammer Games’ MW3 was nominated as the ‘best multiplayer game of 2023’ by the BAFTA Games Awards… let us explain why.
Besides the classic game modes of 6v6 playlists, there’s a new type of match known as Cutthroat Mode, where 3 teams of 3 players duke it out in Core Multiplayer maps. This isn’t your typical free-for-all deathmatch, as each player can only be eliminated once before they’re out for the round, making this an intensely strategic mode.
Modern Warfare III also gives players access to the biggest zombie map in the franchise! Team up with a squad, get your favourite loadouts and deploy in apocalyptic Urzikstan with your buddies, where you will find multiple zombie threats and upgradeable loot.
What makes MW3 an amazing experience on the PS5 is the adaptive triggers on the DualSense controllers. You can feel the vibrations as you pull the trigger. Every gun has a different feel. For instance, the heavy-duty assault rifles feel cumbersome in your hands, as the adaptive trigger feels harder to push. This level of detail only achievable on the PS5 makes the experience that much more immersive.
4. Rainbow Six Siege (R6)
Genre: First-Person Shooter
Developer: Ubisoft
Players: 1 - 5
Rainbow Six Siege is at the peak of its popularity with an active player base of hundreds of thousands. People often ask if now would be a good time to jump in, as some might find its seemingly complex mechanics discouraging. The answer is always yes. Rainbow Six Siege has a strong, dedicated community and there’s a metric ton of resources available that help introduce new players to the game.
R6 is an online multiplayer game with three main competitive modes: bomb, secure area and hostage. All three require different team structures and strategies but by far the most popular is bomb, where the defending team must stop the attacking team from defusing any of the two bomb sites placed on a map. There is a time limit of 3 minutes, with a pre-round scouting phase of 60 seconds. This may not seem like a lot, but every second counts in this fast-paced shooter.
You and your friends can team up in a group of 5 and dive right into Quick Play, Ranked or Unranked. There is also Terrorist Hunt, where players can go solo or in groups to defeat AI enemies, which is ideal for learning maps and testing your weapons.
What makes Rainbow Six Siege so active despite its launch in 2015, is the variety and complexity that it offers, as well as a strong, competitive scene. At the time of writing, there are over 70 operators with unique abilities. These operators are split into attackers and defenders, for the attacking and defending teams respectively. You’ll never run out of options when strategizing with your squad.
If you and your buds enjoy games that require voice communication, teamplay and coordination, you should definitely try this out. If you’re returning to R6S after a long hiatus, now would be a good time as the game is updated frequently with regular seasonal events.
3. WWE 2K24
Genre: Sports & Fighting
Developer: 2K Games
Players: 1 - 4
Welcome to WWE 2K24, where friendships are both forged and ruined simultaneously. The WWE series has been a couch-multiplayer powerhouse for decades. The franchise made its mark on consoles in the form of WWE SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain, back in 2003. Since then, the franchise has improved drastically, and the latest instalment is a testament of just how much fun these games have become.
We’ve already covered the features of WWE 2K24 in our guide, but in this blog post we're explaining why it makes it onto our list as one of the best multiplayer games, if not series, for the PS5.
The WWE games are known for some of the best fun one can have with their friends. WWE 2K24 does not fail to continue this trend. It improves on previous titles by introducing modes like Special Guest Referee match and the Casket Match, where the objective is to bury your opponent in a casket.
In Special Guest Referee mode, once you and your mates decide who will be the referee for the match, hilarity will ensue. If you’re looking for a fair fight, pick the most sensible friend for the job! This is because referees have full control of the match, meaning they can decide when to count pinfalls, check for submissions and ultimately end the match!
There are more multiplayer modes available in WWE 2K24, such as Royal Rumble, Tag Team matches and War Games. In terms of customisation, players can create their own fearsome wrestler, customise them to their heart's content, and compete to become the WWE Universal Champion.
When it comes to determining who the WWE Champion is among your buds, what better way to prove it than to supplex each other in the ring with your all-time favourite wrestlers? Get it now on PS5.
2. Fortnite
Genre: Battle Royale
Developer: Epic Games
Players: 1 - 4
Fornite became publicly available as a battle royale game in 2017. Much like PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG), players drop onto a zone, ransack the map for loot and kill all opposition until they're the last one standing. The difference is that in Fortnite players can build around them, and the environment is mostly destructible. This concept is simple but appealing for a wide audience, which is why it garnered so much interest off the back of PUBG's growth.
Since then, in 2017, Fortnite has become something of a phenomenon. The online multiplayer sensation has seen its fair share of success, with brand partnerships including Marvel, DC, Star Wars, etc.
There is no shortage of variety in this multiplayer sensation. As of 2024, there are 6 Core Gamemodes: Battle Royale, Save the World, Creative, LEGO Fortnite, and the most recent instalments: Rocket Racing and Fortnite Festival. Not to mention, these modes can be played solo alongside strangers but in our opinion, it's far more enjoyable with a group of mates. Players can band together in duos, trios and squads.
Owing to its success is the overwhelming amount of user-Generated Content (UGC) available, thanks to a massive and active community. This is found in Creative mode, where players craft their own experiences by creating their own maps and objectives that can be shared publicly. Ever wanted to take part in the Squid Game? Ever wanted to play a lumberjack simulator? Well, you can do all this in Fortnite. It's not just restricted to its Core Gamemodes - you can do anything you want in it - be it with friends or strangers!
1. Helldivers 2
Genre: Co-op Adventure Shooter
Developer: Arrowhead Studio Games
Players: 1 - 4
Helldivers 2 tops our list as one of the best multiplayer games for PS5. Ever since its launch in 2015 as a top-down, co-op strategy game, Helldivers has come a long way. Having sold millions of copies only a few weeks after its release, it’s safe to say this game is here to stay for the long haul.
Helldivers 2 can only be described as a frantic, team-based strategy game, where players fend off alien threats to restore peace in Super Earth. As we've mentioned in our previous article about the origins of Helldivers 2, our titular heroes are summoned by the High Command to attack and defend hostile planets. Players are then expected to complete Orders (small-scale missions designed for squads) to progress missions and earn rewards.
The online multiplayer aspect of Helldivers 2 is the cherry on top. Players and squads can take part in massive community events and Major Orders, where sometimes even developers can interfere!
In terms of personalisation, there is plenty of customisation to be had in Helldivers 2. Players can select their loadouts and upgrade them depending on their playstyle. For the fashion-conscious, there’s no shortage of cosmetics to make your elite soldiers look boujee on the battlefield.
Many believe the level of teamwork involved is what makes Helldivers 2 so much fun. Oh, and the potential for gags. “Friendly fire is one of the best things Arrowhead Game Studios kept,” adds one Reddit user. Even though it’s possible to shoot your own teammates in the heat of battle, it still somehow ends up being hilarious rather than disruptive.
Helldivers 2 offers so much to keep players captivated: a host of planets to explore, enemies to annihilate and a rewarding loot system. Add to that a plethora of missions of varying difficulties, ranging from ‘trivial’ to ‘impossible’, and we have ourselves one of the best online games for groups of friends to play together. Get it now on PS5.
