Tomb Raider Remastered Gameplay

Tomb Raider Remastered Gameplay

Deemed one of the most anticipated games of 2024, Tomb Raider I-III is one of those classic trilogies that fans have been requesting for a long time. Now, we are finally receiving it.

To understand the phenomenon that is the Tomb Raider series, let's take a step back. Back in the day when 3D gaming was relatively new, Tomb Raider wowed fans worldwide with its groundbreaking graphics and mechanics.

The series followed the adventures of the British archaeologist Lara Croft, as she explored tombs and fought off all kinds of enemies. Tomb Raider became a hit due to its gameplay, and most importantly Lara Croft, one of the best female characters in the gaming industry!

Tomb Raider Remastered Game Titles in Order

Here's a quick rundown of the games and their DLCs included in the Tomb Raider I-III Remastered:

Tomb Raider I & Unfinished Business

Tomb Raider I Egyptian Tomb

Originally released in 1996, this remastered chapter features Lara on a quest to find an ancient artifact. Navigate deadly tombs, fight off wild animals, and take down a secret society to obtain the artifact. The Unfinished Business expansion includes four additional levels for players to explore.

Tomb Raider II & Golden Mask

Tomb Raider II & Golden Mask

Originally released in 1997, this sequel oversees Lara in pursuit of the mythical dagger of Xian, an artifact with the power to unlock the secrets of an ancient Chinese emperor's tomb. Lara will have to navigate even more treacherous tombs. The Golden Mask expansion introduces five additional levels in a thrilling side-quest to find the mysterious Mask.

Tomb Raider III & The Lost Artifact

Tomb Raider III & The Lost Artifact

The third instalment, originally released in 1998, features Lara Croft travelling to India and Antarctica in search of four powerful artifacts that could spell disaster if they fall into the wrong hands. In the Lost Artifact, Lara learns of a fifth artifact following the events of Tomb Raider 3. This rare item has Lara travelling across the Scottish Highlands, England and France.

The Original vs the Remastered Trilogy

Enhanced Graphics

The graphics in Tomb Raider remastered have been overhauled but retain the classic PlayStation 1 aesthetic. Not only have the textures and models received big improvements, but the lighting and FX have too, making the experience more immersive.

If the improved visuals aren't of interest, old school fans will be happy to know they can switch back to the legacy graphics at any point during gameplay!

Modern Controls

The controls have also been updated for a smoother, more intuitive experience. No longer will you be frustrated with weird camera angles, as the camera view has been reworked.

Additionally, Lara's mobility has been improved, as she can now roll underwater and in mid-air in all of the Tomb Raider titles. One of the coolest features is that players can toggle between the original "tank" controls and the new controls. So, if you want that authentic Tomb Raider experience, you absolutely can!

Harder Difficulty Mode

Aspyr have bestowed upon us a harder difficulty mode, perfect for those looking for a challenge. In this difficulty setting, traps and enemies receive a significant buff, so you'll want to watch your step more closely!

Additionally, healing is reduced, so players have to be more tactical and considerate when navigating dangerous territory. Fortunately though, savegame crystals are back so players can save their progress at various checkpoints. No more dying at the end boss and having to replay the entire level for the millionth time. Hooray!

Achievements

The introduction of achievements provides a lot of replayability, encouraging players to play the game in different ways.

Photo Mode

One of the coolest features of Tomb Raider remastered is the photo mode. This can be accessed by pressing both thumbsticks simultaneously on the PS4 and PS5 controllers. To enter photo mode on the Nintendo Switch, press both joysticks at the same time.
