Welcome to MTG Universes Beyond: Fallout

Published on 12th March 2024 by Guy Lanham

Magic The Gathering Fallout Universes Beyond

Get ready to traverse the Wasteland as Magic: The Gathering reveals its latest Universes Beyond addition: MTG Fallout. In the Fallout series, we are thrust into a dystopian world scarred by the events of the Great War and nuclear Armageddon. In the aftermath, we witness a war-torn United States transformed into a barren wasteland. Mutated creatures, gangs and hostile robots roam the lands, setting the scene for what's to come.

With the introduction of MTG Fallout comes four preconstructed Commander decks, each representing one of the Wastelands and its factions. These decks all have a unique flavour (Nuka-Cola anyone?), and are easy for anyone to pick up and play right out of the box!

What are the Commander Decks in MTG Fallout?

Scrappy Survivors (Red-Green-White): Lead by Dogmeat, a loyal canine companion in the Fallout series, we have the Scrappy Survivors Commander deck. This deck contains a ready-to-play 100 card deck. It focuses on scavenging for tools, Food tokens, and allies. Introducing Junk tokens, players can sacrifice them to draw cards, making it a perfect choice for those who enjoy generating tokens and enhancing their creatures with Auras and Equipment. Auras are basically buffs or debuffs, depending on the effect, that are removed from play once the permanent they are attached to leaves the battlefield.

Mutant Menace (Black-Green-Blue): This sinister deck, featuring The Wise Mothman as its commander, is centred around buffing your creatures. Play mutated creatures and buff them with counters (counters are a mechanic that represent an effect). You can also irradiate your opponents with rad counters - a new mechanic that mills and damages an affected player. This is perfect for players who prefer to stomp their foes with terrifying creatures that grow larger and larger.

Hail, Caesar (Red-White-Black): Commanded by the infamous Caesar, this deck centres around militant factions, soldiers, and wasteland raiders. Known for his strategic prowess, Caesar commands the fierce legion. Utilise the squad mechanic to create extra token copies of creatures and overwhelm your opponents with large numbers. This is perfectly suited to those who enjoy fast-paced, aggressive playstyles.

Science! (Blue-White-Red): Get ready to join the Institute with the Science! Commander deck. This invention is focused on high-tech energy weapons, scientists, synths, and pre-war robots. With Dr. Madison Li as your commander, make cunning plays and outsmart your opponent. Play artifacts to generate energy - a returning mechanic and resource that is accumulated through various means. Energy counters can be spent to pay the costs of triggered or activated abilities.

Themes and Mechanics in MTG Fallout

Junk Tokens

Experience a unique ability with Junk tokens, a new artifact subtype. These tokens can be sacrificed to exile the top card of your library (deck) which is playable on your turn (provided you have the necessary resources to play that card). This activated ability can only be played at sorcery speed, meaning it can't be done during the opponent's turn.

Energy and Proliferate Mechanics

MTG Fallout returns with the Energy mechanic, allowing players to generate energy counters through artifacts. Proliferate also makes a comeback, enabling players to amplify the impact of counters on the battlefield. There are various counters to explore. These can have effects like buffing or debuffing creatures, or applying special effects to players.

The New Radiation Mechanic

Fallout introduces the Radiation mechanic, echoing the hazardous environment of the Wasteland. When triggered during the precombat main phase, players with rad counters must mill a card for each counter. For each nonland card milled, they lose 1 life and remove a rad counter.

What else is available in the new MTG Fallout release?

In addition to the four preconstructed Commander decks, Collector Boosters will also be available. In these boosters you can expect a range of rares and/or mythics, foils, extended-art cards, and special Fallout-themed card treatments. Each one contains 15 Magic: The Gathering cards and 1 traditional foil double-sided token.
