Celebrate Minecraft's 15th Anniversary
Published on 13th May 2024 by Guy Lanham
It's been a hot minute since Minecraft's big 10th anniversary update, when the Village & Pillage Update went live. Around the same time, Mojang released a nostalgic web browser version of the Classic Minecraft, which anyone can access for free.
Now, it's 2024 and we're on the cusp of another big release. The game officially turns 15 years old on the 17th of May (that makes us feel old). As such, Mojang is celebrating its anniversary with update 1.21, dubbed 'Tricky Trials'. This will focus on the new trial chambers, as well as new blocks and more unannounced features soon to be revealed.
In this article, we'll go over some of Minecraft's standalone releases and DLCs that you can get your hands on today and experience the magic of block building. No matter what year they were released in, and no matter what your age is, Minecraft is a timeless sensation that we believe everyone should experience.
The History of Minecraft
Minecraft was first made public in 2009 by Markus "Notch" Persson. As you will find in the Classic Minecraft web browser game, it was a mere shadow of what it has become today.
Back then, in 2009, there were only 32 blocks (versus 700+ today) and most of them were simply wool in different colours. Also, fun fact: creepers (the green explosive mobs) were a byproduct of a coding error that was supposed to create harmless pigs in the early stages of development.
Fast forward to 2014 and the company behind the curtains, Mojang, was acquired by Microsoft in 2014 for a casual $2.5 billion. This was following collaboration with the tech giant since 2012. It was reported that Notch (Minecraft's creator) was ready to pass the torch as he didn't want the responsibility of owning a global-scale company.
Today, Minecraft remains one of the most popular games to ever grace our screens, with millions of active players worldwide to this day. However, it wasn't without the help of YouTube and other platforms that propelled Minecraft's success. Some creators even shaped their careers around the success of Minecraft. Back in 2021, we reported Minecraft as one of the top games for streamers.
Minecraft Dungeons
Taking place in the Overworld, Minecraft Dungeons is a dungeon-crawler experience. This title offers a spin on classic swords-and-magic elements, where players embark on a perilous quest to defeat the evil boss Arch-Illager.
Up to four players can form a party, either online or couch co-op, to roam zombie-infested dungeons, fight mobs and experience challenging levels in the Overworld. Plus, with tons of DLC content, like Echoing Void, and Hidden Depths, players have access to brick-loads of content.
Minecraft Legends Deluxe Edition
Minecraft Legends is set in a time long before the familiar events of the original Minecraft. Amidst an invasion by the Piglins, these formidable hordes have flooded into the Overworld seeking to take over the land. Now it's up to the players to defend their realm from the threat.
In Minecraft Legends, base building is a core part of defending against waves of Piglins. But, defense is not everything. Players need to strategise and lead forces to attack Piglin strongholds to be able to put a stop to their threat.
Just like in Minecraft Dungeons, players can party up in groups of 4, either online or locally. And even if your mates all own different consoles, it's no problem because Minecraft Legends supports crossplay.
Wrap Up of Minecraft's 15 Year Anniversary
In the new 1.21 Tricky Trials update, players can expect new in-game pixelated paintings to enhance your base decor, and new music soundtracks to be discovered in Trial Chambers.
