Sega to celebrate 20th birthday of Sonic the Hedgehog

One of gaming's most famous heroes is to mark an important milestone in 2011 with the 20th anniversary of the debut of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sega has announced that its lightning-fast mascot will be celebrating a landmark birthday on June 23rd 2011, exactly two decades after the debut of the original Sonic the Hedgehog game on Mega Drive in 1991.

Sonic quickly became a favourite among gamers thanks to his high-speed gameplay style and roguish attitude, with titles starring the blue hedgehog having clocked up more than 70 million sales worldwide.

Most recently, the one-time rival of Mario starred in the well-received Sonic Colours for Nintendo's Wii and DS, which saw him embark on an adventure in an intergalactic theme park.

Sonic's popularity has been such that he has also branched out beyond gaming, appearing in comic series, TV cartoons and in a wide array of toys and merchandise.

Sega promised that a number of special events are to be held around the world to celebrate Sonic's birthday, details of which will be revealed throughout 2011.
