Call of Duty: Black Ops smashes five-day entertainment sales record

Blockbuster shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops has claimed yet another record after setting a new entertainment industry sales benchmark in its first five days on global release.

Activision has revealed that the acclaimed title generated more than $650 million (£406.3 million) in less than a week, more than any other game, film, book or entertainment product in history.

The game's robust online mode has also been shattering Xbox Live user records, with more than 2.6 million unique users clocking up 5.9 million multiplayer hours on launch day alone.

This reflects the success seen during the game's UK launch, where sales of Black Ops generated more money in five days than all combined gaming sales for the previous two weeks put together.

Activision Publishing boss Eric Hirshberg said: "There are many reasons for the success of Black Ops, but first and foremost is the fact that our team at Treyarch delivered a truly awesome game."
