The new Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and Wii title has attracted some of the best reviews of any game in the long-running series, snagging perfect scores from publications such as Official PlayStation Magazine, 1UP and GamesRadar.
Critics have praised the game for its innovative new features, such as the Need for Speed Autolog, an integrated social network that allows players from across the world to communicate, compare stats and race competitively.
Craig Sullivan, creative director for developer Criterion Games, said: "We can't wait to see how many new friendships this game will enhance and also how many it may break."
Need for Speed Hot Pursuit once again provides a glimpse into the world of illegal street racing, allowing gamers to operate on both sides of the law by playing as either the racers or the cops.
The title also provides access to a bonus preview of the next instalment, Need for Speed: Shift 2 Unleashed, which hits stores in 2011.
