The antics of gaming's angriest deity gets some serious spit and polish to enhance his bile-ridden quest for revenge in God of War III Remastered for the PS4.
While we wait for the next installment to appear this remastered version of the PS3's God of War III has been released to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the hyper violent third-person slash 'em up/platformer series. And the age rating warnings tell you everything you need to know about the God of War series' distinct 'sensibilities' - "Intense Violence", "Nudity", "Strong Language", "Strong Sexual Content" and the inevitable "Blood and Gore".
And said graphic content has been given a boot up the 'wow' scale with the resolution set at 1080p and the action running at a smooth 60fps. There's also a batch of new textures and dynamic lighting effects; you know, the usual. But when the usual was jaw dropping in the first place because of its sheer sense of scale, then this remastered version is something to crow about. Really, when scaling a demonic critter the size of Basingstoke before stabbing it in the eye socket, detail and fluidity are everything.
For newcomers then, God of War III is an essential purchase but with one caveat. If you haven't played the first two in the series, you might find yourself a tad confused about exactly what you're doing and why, despite the story recap video at the beginning. The best way to approach Kratos' 'motivation' is simple though - you're angry, you want vengeance and you're going to kill everything that gets in your way as you stomp up Mount Olympus, determined on ripping your dad, Zeus, a new one. Job done.
Perhaps the only real fly in the bloody ointment is for veterans of the series. Yes, God of War III features upgraded looks and a spangly new photo mode to capture those delicate moments of artery blood sprays - but that's pretty much it. If you've already played through the campaign on PS3, don't expect anything else other than the costume DLC which only comes available after your first full play through anyway.
But for everyone else, God of War III still delivers a cartilage-ripping, God-defying fist to the face, where enemies are the size of mountains and the spectacle is at times simply astonishing. You really won't have seen or experienced anything quite like it.
