Why Gears of War Ultimate Edition only includes the first game

Gears of War Ultimate Edition is coming soon, but only remakes the first the game in the series. Rod Fergusson, head of The Coalition, the studio which inherited the series from creator Epic Games, has explained why.

Describing the remake as an "on ramp" for the developer, which is also working on Gears of War 4, Fergusson went on to explain how much work is involved in taking a game from the previous hardware generation and remaking it for the Xbox One.

"It's really hard work [to remaster an entire series]," he told the crowd at a San Diego Comic Con panel. "It takes a long time. It took us in the end 16 to 18 months to do the first one, and to try and do three games... how many people would we need to have? It just wasn't logistically or physically or technically possible. For us it was really about what can we do, what can we focus on."

It’s worth noting that Ultimate Edition isn’t a remaster or an emulation, but a completely rebuilt version of the first Gears of War, created from the ground up for Xbox One. That’s also why The Coalition isn’t adding Horde Mode, the co-op multiplayer mode introduced in Gears of War 2.

Gears of War Ultimate Edition will be out later this year, exclusively for Xbox One. After release, the title will be bundled in with every new Xbox One console, Fergusson also revealed.
