Activision has lifted the coffin lid on the popular Zombies mode for upcoming sequel Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, and it sounds like a blast.

As in previous games, the Zombies mode will take the form of a co-operative four player campaign. This time it will feature a "gritty 1940s film-noir narrative" with players taking the roles of The Magician, The Femme-Fatale, The Cop, and The Boxer. Weapons will be period authentic, for the most part, though there will apparently be a rocket-powered riot shield so developer Treyarch is obviously using a little artistic license when it comes to history.

The series has attracted high profile voice talent in the past, and that's no different this time. The Zombies characters will be played by Jeff Goldbum (Jurassic Park), Heather Graham (Boogie Nights), Neil McDonough (Captain America) and Ron Perlman (Hellboy). Robert Picardo (Star Trek Voyager) will portray the mysterious Shadow Man.

In related news, PlayStation 4 players will get first access to the game's multiplayer beta trial, which kicks off on 19 August. Xbox One and PC players will get their own beta tests later, while Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 won't get a beta trial at all.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 launches on 6 November.
