Mario Kart Wii hangs on to pole position in Japan

Mario Kart Wii has held on to the top sales spot in its native Japan, according to Media Create figures seen by Gamesindustry.biz.

The game remained at the top of the chart for the week ending April 27th, ahead of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G in second place, and Valkyria Chronicles in third.

Mario Kart Wii is the latest iteration of the popular Mario cartoon racing series, which previously proved a massive hit on both the Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 consoles.

The new version for the next-generation Wii sees the return of Italian plumber Mario and friends, including Princess Peach and Donkey Kong, trying to win races using special weapons such as explosive shells.

Games website Computer and Video Games called the game "a really solid Mario Kart with a terrific online setup".
