Super Mario Galaxy makes huge splash in Japan

Super Mario Galaxy is set to be the biggest game released on the Nintendo Wii so far judging by the response it has already received in Japan.

The newest outing for the moustachioed Italian has been snapped up by 250,000 gamers in its first week on sale, according to figures from Media Create.

That is almost equivalent to the total sales of the rest of the Japanese top ten, despite a strong showing from Xbox 360 game Ace Combat 6 which grabbed second place with a respectable 77,000 sales in the week following its release.

Super Mario Galaxy pitches the well-loved hero into space as he tries to save his beloved princess Peach from the clutches of the evil Bowser.

But the sheer scale and freedom of the game is the biggest change to the well-loved Mario formula, with the game taking players to various planets in glorious 3D - each with their own gravity and physics to trick and trap an unwitting plumber.

Unfortunately most UK gamers will not get their hands on Super Mario Galaxy for a week or two yet.

However, Game shoppers can pick it up a day early by heading to special launch events at eight flagship stores across the UK on November 15th - including stores in London's Oxford Street, Birmingham's Bull Ring and Queen Street in Cardiff.
