Bethesda has accepted 2,240 bottle caps as payment for a copy of Fallout 4.

A fan of the series, known online as GatorMacheteJr, had been collecting the caps - which are used as currency in the game's post-apocalyptic world - ever since Fallout 3 was released in 2008. When Fallout 4 was announced, he decided to see if the publisher would accept the caps as payment for a copy of the game.

The collection weighed 11.2 pounds - "You don't want to know how much it cost to ship it to Maryland,” he joked online - and was sent along with a letter saying "I only saw prices listed in pre-war dollars and wasn't sure what the exchange rate is these days”.

Bethesda has now contacted this devoted fan to tell him that his stunt has worked; the publisher will give him a copy of the game when it launches. Don't start saving up bottle caps of your own though - this is a one-off gift. "For being first, he deserves the recognition,” said Bethesda's community lead, Matt Grandstaff on Twitter.

The rest of us will just have to buy the game using old fashioned money. Fallout 4 launches for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on 10 November.
