Halo 3 has become the best selling game ever, having racked up £17 million worth of sales in the UK in its first week.
The battle game made up more than two-thirds of all Xbox 360 titles sold, and also prompted huge demand for Xbox hardware. In fact, the Xbox 360 sold more than the Nintendo Wii for the first time in 26 weeks.
In America Halo 3 racked up an estimated $170 million in sales in the first 24 hours, beating previous records set by the likes of Spider-Man 3.
"Halo 3 has become a pop culture phenomenon," said Microsoft's Shane Kim.
"Not only is Halo 3 setting sales records, it's also redefining entertainment. Within the first 20 hours alone, we've seen more than a million Xbox LIVE members come online to play Halo 3 - that makes September 25 the most active Xbox LIVE gaming day in history."
Halo 3 is the conclusion to the Halo story and answers questions about the fate of heroic Master Chief and his AI sidekick Cortana.
