Mortal Kombat to return in 2011 with goriest game yet

One of gaming's most well-known and brutal gaming franchises is to make an explosive return next year with the launch of an all-new Mortal Kombat game.

The simply-titled Mortal Kombat is in development for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 by NetherRealm Studios, under the supervision of the franchise's creator Ed Boon.

Fans have been promised a game which takes the series right back to its roots, offering up bloody and brutal one-on-one fights with classic 2D gameplay.

Among the features of the new game are an extensive story mode, tag team and cooperative settings and a wide selection of famous Mortal Kombat fighters from across the years.

In addition, the series' signature Fatality finishing moves will also make a triumphant return and are set to be more grisly than ever.

Mr Boon said: "This game really is a response to what players have been demanding: mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever!"

The Mortal Kombat warriors were last seen in 2008 with the launch of Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe, which saw the likes of Liu Kang and Scorpion face off against comic book heroes such as Superman and Batman.
