Developer BioWare's epic space opera sequel was picked out as this spring's best title for players aged over 18, while Quantic Dream's PlayStation 3 narrative drama was selected as the top pick for parents.
Mass Effect 2, which is available on Xbox 360 and PC, was described as a "branching, diverse yet focused and compelling" experience which is "unequalled".
The epic game follows the continuing adventures of spacefaring hero Commander Shepard in a story shaped by character relationships and moral choices.
Similarly, Heavy Rain also won acclaim for its branching storyline, which centres on several characters whose lives are torn apart by a murder mystery, with the FGAs praising the title for its "real moments of emotion and decision".
Both titles have proven to be commercial successes as well, topping the all-formats chart in their debut weeks earlier this year.
