The Sims celebrates tenth birthday

Lovers of The Sims will have reason for celebration this week, as the perennially popular lifestyle simulation franchise has celebrated its tenth birthday.

Publisher EA has revealed that in the decade that has passed since the release of the first Sims game in 2000, the series has grossed more than $2.5 billion (£1.6 billion) in sales, exceeding blockbuster movies like Avatar and Titanic.

The most recent game in the series, The Sims 3, has sold more than 4.5 million copies to date, while the combined worldwide sales of all the titles and their expansion packs comes to more than 125 million.

Rod Humble, head of the EA Play brand, said the game has succeeded in becoming the most popular PC game ever thanks to its accessibility and predicted more big things for The Sims in future.

He said: "With its charming and quirky style, lovely emergent game mechanics and user created creativity that delights every day, The Sims is a game that can be enjoyed by everybody and reflects what you put into it."

This news comes as the latest expansion to the series, The Sims 3: Design & High-Tech Stuff, makes its debut in UK game stores.
