BioWare's newest sci-fi role-playing game for Xbox 360 and PC sold enough copies to depose reigning champion Just Dance for Wii, selling even more copies than the first game did on its debut.
The game, which sees the heroic Commander Shepard embark on an all-new mission into dangerous parts of the galaxy, has been equally warmly received by critics, with the likes of Eurogamer and Official Xbox Magazine awarding it perfect scores.
Mass Effect 2's stellar debut meant that Just Dance was forced to settle for second place, ending its two-week reign as the UK's top-selling title.
The only other new entry this week was the PlayStation 3 online shooter MAG, with the 256-player action spectacular coming in at fourth.
Next week's chart will see the debut of Visceral Games' newest title Dante's Inferno, with the game set to hit PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PSP this week.
