Sonic the Hedgehog ride coming to Alton Towers

Videogaming legend Sonic the Hedgehog is to have a ride named in his honour at Alton Towers.

The theme park has teamed up with Sega to build Sonic Spinball, a new rollercoaster which shares the name of the hedgehog's 1993 Mega Drive pinball game.

It is set to open on February 13th 2010 alongside a special Sonic-themed room at the Alton Towers hotel, allowing guests to enjoy Sega-themed decor and even play some of the games while staying at the resort.

Amanda Farr, Sega Europe's UK marketing director, said that the new additions to the theme park will provide fans with a whole new way to enjoy the famous series.

She added: "I'll certainly be there at the launch of the rollercoaster to have my turn."

Gamers are currently enjoying Sonic's latest team-up with former rival Mario in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games for Wii and DS, which remains one of the top 20 best-selling titles in the country.
