Writing for the website of the Official Xbox Magazine, Mike Channell said it had been a vintage year for Xbox 360 games.
He claimed the overall standard had risen, with games such as Batman: Arkham Asylum and Assassin's Creed II wowing both gamers and reviewers.
However, for Mr Channell, one game stood out - Colin McRae DiRT 2.
The game is the latest in a franchise which carries the name of the Scottish driver who won the 1995 World Rally Championship - and also the first console title in the series since his death in a helicopter crash in 2007.
Mr Channell admitted he had been a fan of the Colin McRae games since they first appeared in 1998, but said the latest instalment is a real step forward in the series and makes the most of all the latest technology.
"DiRT 2 is a noisy, brilliant festival of speed that grabs you from the moment you're dropped into the paddock," he concluded.
