Developer BioWare has teased Mass Effect fans with the reveal of Subject Zero, a "pivotal" new character to appear in the forthcoming Mass Effect 2.
Subject Zero is a mysterious and deadly woman who is set to join the heroic Commander Shepard on his quest to the most dangerous parts of the galaxy.
However, the powerful biotic is anything but a clean-cut heroine herself and hides a secretive and violent past, as well as being among the most powerful combatants around.
The character will be one of a huge cast of heroes, villains, aliens and assassins which BioWare is hoping will allow players to engage with the game's universe more deeply than ever.
Project director Casey Hudson said: "By harnessing cutting-edge technology, developers can ultimately unlock the full potential of emotionally engaging human interaction."
The release of the new game is also set to be accompanied by a tie-in comic series which will help to fill in the gaps between the new game and its epic predecessor.
