Mass Effect 2 'will be darker and better'

Fans of BioWare's epic sci-fi title Mass Effect have been promised a sequel which is darker, more refined and better than its acclaimed predecessor.

The developer told Kotaku that the forthcoming Mass Effect 2 for Xbox 360 and PC will be the "dark middle act" of the planned trilogy, comparing it to the Star Wars film The Empire Strikes Back.

Gamers have been told that a number of fan-friendly changes and inclusions have been made for the sequel, including cameos from favourite characters, more conversational dialogue and shorter loading times.

However, BioWare remained tight-lipped on most of the game's key plot details, implying that there are more surprises to come.

Mac Walters, the game's lead writer, said: "It's Mass Effect but it's such a better experience now."

Expectations are high over the title, which was last week selected as IGN.com's Game of the Show at the GamesCom event in Germany.

The site described the game as "a beautiful universe that we absolutely cannot wait to explore".
