Mass Effect 2 crowned best of GamesCom

BioWare's hotly-anticipated role-playing action title Mass Effect 2 has been selected by gaming website IGN.com as the best new title on display at the recent GamesCom event.

The forthcoming sci-fi epic was named as the overall Game of the Show as well as the best title showcased for Xbox 360, with the site describing it as "a beautiful universe that we absolutely cannot wait to explore".

Mass Effect 2 beat off some hot competition to take the accolade, with console specific accolades also going to the PlayStation 3's psychological thriller Heavy Rain and the Wii's horror remake Silent Hill: Shattered Memories.

Other awards handed out by IGN.com included a win for Microsoft for having provided the biggest surprise of the show in Cologne with the unveiling of Fable III.

Alex Simmons, UK editor-in-chief of IGN.com, said: "The event provides a spectacular backdrop for publishers to showcase their titles and these awards will salute those titles that shine out ahead of the field."

Mass Effect developer BioWare recently ramped up anticipation for the upcoming sequel by revealing the all-new character Grunt, an alien warrior who can accompany the series's heroic Commander Shephard on his interstellar mission.
