11.5m subscribe to Wrath of the Lich King

More than 11.5 million gamers worldwide have subscribed to the massively multiplayer online role-playing game World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King.

The title has been available to gamers since entering the market on November 13th, with in excess of 2.8 million copies sold within the first 24 hours.

This made it the fastest selling PC game of all time and further strong sales figures helped the title sell more than four million copies in its first month, another record.

Mike Morhaime, chief executive and co-founder of Blizzard Entertainment, said: "We're pleased to welcome the new and returning players who have helped World of Warcraft reach these new milestones and we appreciate the enthusiasm and support that the game's global community has continued to show."

Bob McKenzie, senior vice-president of merchandising at GameStop, added that the base World of Warcraft game and World of Warcraft Battle Chest are selling better than last year.

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King headed the recent US PC Chart, with Spore in second and Call of Duty; World at War a further place back.
