Final Fantasy 15 to have a true open world

Square Enix's upcoming RPG epic Final Fantasy 15 will be a truly openworld experience, the game's director, Hajime Tabata, has revealed.

He made the announcement in an interview with Gamespot. “The world is connected by continuous land,” he told the site. “If those areas were disconnected, it would feel distant from reality. You’ll find that you’ll be able to walk or drive or take a train and travel through this world seamlessly. I feel you’ll be able to experience something similar to a real trip.”

To really sell the idea that you're travelling across an entire continent, the developers have taken inspiration from different places in the real world. You'll find areas that are based on Shinjuku, Havana and Venice for example.

Right now, the question is whether or not players will be able to explore this vast world using an airship, as in the classic top-down Final Fantasy games. “To be completely honest, that’s still to be determined,” Tabata says. “But the development team does understand that this is something everyone is looking forward to. It is a huge technical challenge; as mentioned earlier, all areas are connected. We are trying to tackle that challenge.”

Final Fantasy 15 is in development for both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. If you want to be one of the first to try it, you need to get your hands on Final Fantasy Type-0 HD when it comes out in March. Only the initial “day one” shipment of that game, and its Collector's Edition, will contain an exclusive demo of Final Fantasy 15 for hardcore fans. That demo will never be released anywhere else, according to Square Enix.
