Writers Guild of America reveals video game nominees

#

We're very much in the midst of awards season now, and the latest to announce their nominees is the Writers Guild of America.

The WGA is the union which represents all Hollywood scriptwriters, and to be nominated a game's script must have been written by signed up members. Once upon a time, that made for a thin field of nominees, but as video game scripters are increasingly working across other media, we're genuinely seeing the best of gaming stories represented in the WGA line-up.

For 2015, that means four games get the nod. Alien Isolation was co-written by comic scribe Dan Abnett (Guardians of the Galaxy) with Dion Lay and former UK journalist Will Porter. There's also Left Behind, the critically acclaimed spin-off DLC campaign from The Last of Us, written by Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann.

Two Assassin’s Creed titles are also up for the award. Assassin’s Creed: Unity makes the cut, with a veritable army of Ubisoft scripters contributing to the mammoth French Revolution epic, while slavery-themed Black Flag spin-off Freedom Cry is also up for consideration, penned by Jill Murray and Melissa MacCoubrey.

The winner will be announced, alongside movie and TV nominations, at the Writer's Guild Awards on 14 February.
