Rise of the Tomb Raider will be published by Microsoft

Microsoft stunned the gaming community in August this year when it revealed that Rise of the Tomb Raider, the upcoming sequel to Lara Croft's 2013 reboot, would be exclusive to Xbox.

Now, the depth of the relationship between Microsoft and Tomb Raider has been revealed. Microsoft will actually publish the new game itself, rather than franchise owner Square Enix. Xbox's head of marketing Aaron Greenberg dropped the news rather casually on Twitter, and Square Enix then explained a little more.

“Yes, Microsoft will be publishing Rise of the Tomb Raider on Xbox,” a Square Enix spokesperson told Gamespot. “Microsoft has always seen huge potential in Tomb Raider and they will get behind this game with more support across development, marketing and retail than ever before, which we believe will be a step in continuing to build the Tomb Raider franchise as one of the biggest in gaming.”

You'd be forgiven for thinking that this means there's no chance of the game coming to other platforms, but apparently not. In another statement, this time to Game Informer magazine, Square Enix also reiterated that the Microsoft exclusivity is not permanent.

“Our partnership with Microsoft on Rise of the Tomb Raider does have a duration,” it said, “but we aren’t discussing those details at this time and are focused on collaborating to deliver a great game on Xbox One and Xbox 360.”

It remains to be seen if that means the game will come to PC, or if Square Enix will be able to release it for PlayStation at a later date.

For now, all we know for sure is that Rise of the Tomb Raider will be out in Winter 2015 for Xbox One and Xbox 360.
