Evolve's DLC maps will be free for all players

You won't need to spend any extra for additional maps in Evolve, the upcoming monster hunting multiplayer game from Left 4 Dead creator Turtle Rock.

The studio has decided that rather than split players between those with extra maps and those without, it's easier to just let everyone have the latest maps whenever they're released. “We can’t break the community up, so all of our maps will be free,” creative director Phil Robb told IGN. “We never want anyone to get booted off of a server because they haven’t bought something.”

That doesn't mean there won't be any paid DLC, but even that is being handled in a rather generous way. “We’ll have characters and monsters, and even if you don’t buy them, if your buddy wants to buy the DLC, that’s cool, and your game will be enhanced through his purchase,” explains Robb. “You won’t be able to play as those characters, but you will certainly be able to play with those characters.”

In other words, if another player has bought a DLC character or monster, they'll still appear in your game and you'll get to either hunt them or work alongside them to win. And just in case that still wasn't generous enough, everyone who pre-orders the game will get the first DLC pack completely free anyway.

Evolve pits four players against a monster, controlled by a fifth player. As the title suggests, the monsters can evolve and grow, becoming harder to take down the longer the match goes on. It's out in February 2015 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
