Rockstar share impressive GTA Online stats

GTA V heists on the way

Grand Theft Auto 5 launches on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One next week, but it's also a little over a year since the award-winning game was originally released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

To celebrate, Rockstar has released a census for GTA Online, the game's online multiplayer section, and the numbers are mind boggling. 33 million people from 224 countries have romped in GTA's online sandbox between 1 October 2013 to 31 October 2014. Together they've accumulated 2.3 billion hours of play. That's around 267,000 years of non-stop play in just twelve months.

9.8 million player-created jobs have been uploaded, and played 5.9 billion times. Players have splashed out on buying 342 million weapons and 422 million vehicles, and have taken 245 million in-game photos using the Snapmatic feature.

Perhaps the biggest news is that the long-awaited multiplayer Heists are closer to reality. Rockstar hasn't dated their implementation, but has said that they'll be part of the first update following the PS4 and Xbox One release.

“We know you’re all excited for more Updates to come,” said Rockstar, “and we’ve got some really exciting stuff in the works to continue adding to, expanding and evolving the world of Grand Theft Auto Online – including the highly anticipated launch of Online Heists which will be available for all four consoles as the first GTA Online Update to happen after the game launches on PS4 and Xbox One.”

Grand Theft Auto 5 is out on 18 November for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It comes to PC in January 2015.
