They may be getting on a bit, but the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 can still learn a few new tricks. At least, that's according to Neil Thompson, the man in charge of art and animation at Bioware. For the studio's upcoming Dragon Age: Inquisition, the need to create a game that looks great on both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as well as the older consoles, means the last generation hardware is really getting a workout.

“We’ve probably pushed them further than we ever have before,” Thompson has told VG247. “When you’re trying to take a gen 4 experience and put it on a gen 3 console without compromise then by necessity you’re pushing those consoles really hard.”

That doesn't mean that Bioware is just cranking up the visuals for the sake of it, though. “We’re very keen that the art should always support the narrative rather than be in opposition to it,” Thompson continued. “We try not to do anything that’s gratuitously there from an artistic perspective. It’s epic and grand but it has to have a point and the point is derived from the narrative.”

Dragon Age: Inquisition launches on 21 November for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.
