Sonic speeding back to gaming in November

There are not one but two new Sonic the Hedgehog games coming to Wii U and 3DS, and they're both arriving on the same day: November 21st.

Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal is the name of the 3DS game, while Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric is coming to Wii U. Both are based on the new animated series, which will debut on Cartoon Network in October. As always, the story finds Sonic teaming up with Tails, Knuckles and Amy to defeat the nefarious schemes of moustache-enthusiast Dr Eggman.

Both games serve as a prequel to the TV show, with the 3DS game offering traditional 2D Sonic gameplay and the Wii U game taking a more exploration and combat based approach. They're being developed in the US, with the Wii U version being worked on by new studio Big Red Button. That was set up by Naughty Dog veteran Bob Rafei, who helped to create Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter.

In case that didn't reassure you that Sonic designer Takashi Iizuka has supervised their development along with Sega's Sonic Team in Japan. Despite this, Sonic Boom will be exclusive to America and Europe, and won't be released in Japan, having been developed with western gamers in mind.
