Hyrule Warriors has playable Ganondorf

The goblin-faced villain of the Legend of Zelda series will be a playable character for the first time ever in upcoming action spin-off Hyrule Warriors, Nintendo has revealed. Fellow bad guys King Zant and Demon Lord Girahim will also be playable.

Hyrule Warriors combines the world and gameplay systems of The Legend of Zelda with the frantic action and combat strategy of Tecmo Koei's cult Warriors series. The resulting mash-up will allow you to steam into battle against hundreds of foes at once, as multiple Zelda characters.

Unlike the Warriors series – which includes Samurai Warriors, Dynasty Warriors and spin-offs based on Japanese sci fi saga Gundam – in this Nintendo approved version, you'll be able to weapons and gadgets selected from an item wheel in order to progress, and you'll also be able to use Link's Hookshot to access high ledges. True to the Nintendo classic, slashing grass with your sword can reveal Rupee coins.

There'll also be an Adventure mode, where you explore a large grid-based map inspired by the Zelda games. Each square on the grid poses a specific battle challenge, with rewards that open up new areas. You'll also earn new characters and weapons here.

It's all shaping up to be something both familiar and fresh, and if you've never played a Warriors game you're in for a treat. Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma is overseeing the whole project, so you know it will be faithful to the Nintendo series.

Hyrule Warriors is a Wii U exclusive and is due on September 19th. And for those of you who want to get the complete Hyrule Warriors experience, check out the Hyrule Warriors: Limited Edition - available Only at GAME which comes with a Legend of Zelda Scarf!
