Formula 1 coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One next year

Fi 2014 on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC

Codemasters has announced that its upcoming Formula 1 title, F1 2014, will only be released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. Fans of the sport wanting to see it realised on the powerful new consoles shouldn't despair though – an entirely new game, taking full advantage of the hardware, will be released early in the Formula 1 season next year.

"Our title for the new generation formats will mark a huge step forward for the F1 series," said creative director Stephen Hood. "We want to be out there earlier in the season and deliver new season content updates digitally as the 2015 season progresses; it's very exciting for the series and our players."

The new games are the first to feature the radical changes that have swept the real life sport. This year saw the introduction of V6 turbo engines, as well as the use of ERS, or Energy Recovery Systems, which stores the energy used during braking and then uses it for increased acceleration. Many fans feel it has revolutionised the sport, bringing back the tactics and drama that made the sport popular in the first place, and which had been lost in an era of ruthlessly efficient computer-managed cars.

F1 2014 will be out on October 17th for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. The new gen console version launches early next year, and will be built around free digital updates that keep it in line with the real F1 season.
