Destiny's cross-platform policy explained

Destiny's cross-platform policy explained

When Bungie's Destiny hits on September 9th, you'll be able to carry your characters over from Xbox 360 to Xbox One, and from PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4. What you won't be able to do is play the game against people playing on older consoles.

The reason, as explained by Bungie engineer Roger Wolfson, is to do with making multiplayer fair to everybody - and since older consoles have lower resolution, those players would be at an immediate disadvantage. ""I’ll speak for the hypothetical player," he told Digital Trends. "I have a disadvantage sniping across the map because [my opponent with a next-gen console] is only two pixels on my screen and I’m four pixels on his."

The idea of being able to port your characters from older consoles to newer is a core part of Bungie's long term plan for Destiny, however, and not just a feature for the here and now. Bungie is already thinking about "a decade from now when we’re into the later sequels" and how you'll still be playing with the same character, who has grown and evolved with you over time.

"Our goal for Destiny is that each time you play it, you’re going to have a different experience," Wolfson says. "Not just because of the social interaction, and the fact that you can play with different people, but because your character is growing and will have different ways of playing the same content every time you go back and replay it."

Destiny is out for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360 on September 9th. If you pre-ordered the game, you could be playing the beta trial right now.
