Space Invaders: The Movie slowly advancing towards us

Hollywood is in love with gaming right now. This year has already seen the release of the Need for Speed movie and there are big budget blockbusters based on Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell, Warcraft, Uncharted and more all on their way.

Most are based on the glossiest and most popular modern gaming franchises. For its latest game adaptation, however, Tinseltown has really dug into the archives. Yes, Space Invaders is to be made into a movie.

Warner Bros is the studio that has picked up the rights to the 1978 Taito arcade classic. The game famously features a mass of spaceships which advance down the screen towards the player. The storyline is non-existent, which may be what appeals to the movie producers. You could apply the Space Invaders name to pretty much any alien invasion movie, so long as there's a scene where missiles are fired upwards at an alien fleet.

Oscar-winning writer and producer Akiva Goldsman will produce. He's been responsible for everything from Batman and Robin to A Beautiful Mind. He'll be joined by Joby Harold, who showed this year that understands the video game mentality with the underrated Tom Cruise sci fi action flick Edge of Tomorrow.

Space Invaders: The Movie does not yet have a release date. Space Invaders: The Game is out now for every gaming device ever invented.
