Final Fantasy 14 could come to Xbox One, says developer

Final Fantasy 14 on Xbox One from GAME

Naoki Yoshida, producer and director of Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn, wants to bring the Japanese MMORPG to Xbox One, but first has to convince Microsoft to let him do it.

The problem? Final Fantasy 14 is a cross-play title, meaning that those on PC and those on PlayStation share the same gameworld and interact with each other. If the game is to come to Xbox, Microsoft would have to agree to this as well. Final Fantasy 11 allowed cross-play between PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, but that was running through publisher Square's own servers. A similar deal would have to be struck again.

“We really want to do an Xbox One version, as a big Xbox player myself,” Yoshida told gaming site Pocket Lint during E3. “The thing is, A Realm Reborn is all about cross-platform compatibility. Anybody from any platform can play together. We don’t want to split our community into people who play on this platform or play on that one. So we’re currently in talks with Microsoft, trying to convince them that this is what needs to happen.”

Keep your fingers crossed. Final Fantasy 14 launched for PC and PlayStation 3 last year. It also came out for PlayStation 4 this April.
