Driveclub developer discusses delay on PlayStation 4

It was going to be the jewel in the PlayStation 4 launch line-up last year, but then at the last minute Driveclub got delayed into 2014. Now developer Evolution, best known for the Motorstorm series, has explained that while the game could have been released six months ago and been popular, the team wouldn't have been happy with it.

"We were very nervous," Simon Barlow, Driveclub's design director, has told VG247. "We could have released it last year, it would have been a good game, it would have done the numbers, people would have been happy. Off we'd go and make another one. But good enough isn't good enough for Evolution. We've always tried to release the best that we possibly can. This was the first time we've ever had to delay a game so we were really nervous. We said directly to Shuhei Yoshida that we need some more time to make it better and he said okay. That kind of support is rare to find at a large publisher, particularly a platform holder."

VG247 has also shared some staggering stats about the socially connected racer. Such as the fact that each car is made from roughly a quarter of a million polygons, that it's so realistic you'll see the dashboard reflected in the windscreen in real time and particles of dirt on the glass will break up the sunlight. They've even built the headlights from rendered layers of glass, and simulated an actual bulb inside to make sure the beams are cast as accurately as possible. It's all because the team wants players to know this is a PlayStation 4 game, and not just existing game assets polished up.

"We obsess over detail," understates Neil Massam, principle vehicle artist. "As it's new PS4 IP we started from the ground up and didn't look at it as regurgitating PS3 assets to PS4."

Driveclub is out on October 8th exclusively for PlayStation 4.
