External hard drive support coming to Xbox One

Microsoft has confirmed that there's a big Xbox One update coming in June, and it brings with it a couple of really handy features.

Top of the list for many will be support for external hard drives. After the update, you'll be able to plug up to two USB hard drives into the console. Format them, and you'll be able to use them to store games, save files and other media for use on the console.

Drives of 256Gb and larger will be supported, provided they use a USB 3.0 connection. You'll also be able to unplug the hard drive, take it to a friend's house and plug it in to use the content on their Xbox One – though you'll need to sign in with your Xbox Live account to access the material, and have any related discs to hand.

That's got to be good news for anyone whose internal drive is already reaching maximum capacity, but there's a neat feature incoming for social types as well: you'll be able to search for people on Xbox Live using their real name.

No more trying to work out if your friend is going by M4sT3rCH13F or n00bKILLA666, as you'll be able to just look for their real name and it'll find their account and Gamertag regardless. Real name info won't show up in games, and you can limit how much – or how little – you want to share.

Keep your eyes peeled for that Update Available message next month.
