Xbox One exclusive Sunset Overdrive finally explained

GAME takes a closer look at Sunset Overdrive for Xbox One.

Announced way back before the launch of the Xbox One, but mostly shrouded in mystery, Resistance and Ratchet & Clank developer Insomniac Games has finally shown off Sunset Overdrive to the press.

The game is a bright, colourful and delirious third person action game, in which you navigate Sunset City, a metropolis under the control of soda company FizzCo. Unfortunately, the corporation's latest energy drink has turned the population into insane monsters - and you're trapped inside the city limits with them.

The game's headline feature is that you'll be travelling around the city with a mix of parkour and skateboard-esque rail grinds, a bit like Crackdown mixed with Dead Rising and Tony Hawk. The weaponry is also guaranteed to get your attention, with guns that fire vinyl records and fireworks, as well as exploding teddy bears.

Perhaps appropriately, Insomniac didn't begin production by nailing down gameplay features or mechanics, but rather made sure the game felt fun. "We spent a lot of time talking about the mood and about how we want players to feel," creative co-director Drew Murray has told Eurogamer. "I want it to sound like Iggy Pop's Search and Destroy, that's the feeling that I want players to have while they're playing the game and moving through the world."

Sunset Overdrive is an Xbox One exclusive, and is due later this year. Microsoft has announced a Day One edition which comes with an overcharged vinyl-shooting gun called Nothin' but the Hits, the Hardcore! Hammer and an outfit based on in-game mascot Fizzie.
