Dragon Age: Inquisition won't have DLC characters

It's been years in the making, but we're finally in the home stretch before Bioware unleashes Dragon Age: Inquisition on the world. That means juicy details are being revealed, and the latest of these is that the game won't be offering additional companion characters as downloadable content.

That's not been the case with previous Bioware games. Dragon Age: Origins added the golem Shale to the your party line-up via DLC, while Dragon Age II introduced Sebastian and Tallis in expansion packs. Because of the way Dragon Age's party system works, the only way this is possible is if the character code is at least partially built in from the start.

“Because of how deeply enmeshed in the system companion characters are, we can’t just add them on the fly, part of them has to be shipped on the disc,” creative director Mike Laidlaw told OXM. “[This] has led to criticism that we’re forcing people to pay for content they already own. It’s not the case, but we’ve decided this time to not go that route. There will be no DLC party members.”

Instead, all nine potential party member will be in the core game, and no more will be added. Bioware has been slowly revealing who will be available to join you. Varric, the bawdy dwarf, will return, along with Cassandra, who was last seen interrogating Varric in Dragon Age II. New characters include Iron Bull, Sera, Solas, and Vivienne.

Dragon Age: Inquisition is due this autumn for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
