Super Smash Bros 3DS and Wii U release confirmed

Nintendo has finally confirmed when we'll get to see its eagerly awaited character crossover multiplayer brawler Super Smash Bros come to the 3DS and Wii U. The handheld edition will arrive this summer, while the Wii U version is set for a winter release. The announcement was made in the latest Nintendo Direct video podcast.

Also revealed were five more playable characters who will duke it out. Pokemon's Charizard, Zelda's Sheik and Metroid's Zero Suit Samus all appeared in previous Smash Bros games as alternate forms, but have been upgraded to full character status. Yoshi also returns to the roster, and Greninja, the evolved form of Pokemon X and Y starter type Froakie, will make its series debut.

The 3DS game will run at 60fps, even in 3D, and when playing offline you'll be able to edit and customise your moves for the first time in the series history. You won't be able to do that when fighting online, but hardcore players will get to choose the “For Glory” option, which removes the use of items from matches.

Exclusive to the 3DS version will be a bonus game called Smash Run. This is a top-down dungeon exploration game for four players, in which you seek out loot in the form of power-ups. At the end of each dungeon, everyone has a big old fight using the items they've found.

Super Smash Bros was first introduced in 1999 for the N64. It's most recent version, Super Smash Bros: Brawl for the Wii, came out in 2008 so a new version is long overdue.
