Batman's new foe is the Arkham Knight

It's rare for a major new character to be introduced to a long-running franchise such as Batman, and its rarer still for that addition to come from a videogame developer rather than the writers at DC Comics. That's what makes Arkham Knight so interesting: not only is it the name of the third and final entry in Rocksteady's Batman trilogy, it's also the name of the brand new bad guy who will test the caped crusader to the limit.

"The opportunity is exciting, but the expectation [from fans] is off the scale," producer Dax Ginn has told VG247. "That's why working with DC is so awesome for us, because those guys are so experienced, and it's obviously something they do a lot of."

Little is known about the character, except his appearance - which is not dissimilar to Batman, but more heavily armoured and minus the cape. He certainly doesn't share Bruce Wayne's distaste for firearms or commitment to non-lethal tactics.

"When the idea was on the table for us to develop our own character and introduce that into Batman's world, there was so much energy and excitement around it at Rocksteady," explains Ginn. "But we really were conscious of the value of the collaboration creatively we have with DC to make sure the gameplay role the Arkham Knight has is really reflected in his appearance and his outlook and his perspective. That's not an opportunity that comes along very often, and I think we totally nailed it with this guy."

Batman: Arkham Knight features a free-roaming Gotham twenty times the size of the previous games, and includes a fully drivable Batmobile to help you get around. It's set for release on October 14th for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
