Tales of Symphonia Chronicles for PlayStation 3 at GAME

In Tales of Symphonia Chronicles, two classics of the much loved JRPG series are brought together in one package for the PS3. Expect engrossing real-time battle action and deep, deep exploration, now with added HD.

It's a series that Nintendo and PS2 fans have already lost themselves in - the original Tales of Symphonia first made an appearance way back in 2003 on the GameCube and PlayStation 2 while its follow-up, Dawn of the New World only ever graced the Wii in 2008. For JRPG fans who have yet to experience the series' delights, you'd be in for a treat even if Namco Bandai hadn't given the graphics an all-over polygon massage.

Both games feature captivating tales of a world that is dying, Mana being bled from its lands and with only a group of plucky youngsters on hand to save the day. And unlike many videogame 'yoofs', you'll end up actually liking this bunch (especially Lloyd and his buddies in the first game) and, dare we say, giving a damn about them.

Viewing the action via isometric 3D, you're given a beguiling overworld to traverse, monster-infested dungeons to explore, quests to conquer and distractions that serve no plot purpose other than to charm you something silly - such as challenging a school geek to a trivia quiz showdown. That's more fun than it sounds. Honest.

But never mind all that - it's the smart battle system that has always formed the addictive core of the series. The real-time battles see you piling into foe in a party of four - with you controlling one of the team members while the other three members are AI-powered, sticking to your pre-battle plan orders. Such a set up brings a hugely rewarding tactical element to each and every fight.

Yes, the PS3 version has been given the obligatory remastered visuals but also includes dual audio and fresh content including new attacks, costumes and more. But perhaps most importantly, Tales of Symphonia Chronicles represents an evergreen experience that highlights what makes JRPGs so bewitching - great gameplay - and also acts as a timely reminder that the online arguments currently raging about the importance of1080p/60fps really shouldn't be so, well, important...
