Editor's Choice: Old Gen, New Tricks

Editor's Choice

In everyone's mad rush to embrace the next gen, you might have thought that the PS3 and X360 would be winding up; that publishers are packing away their 'last-gen' dev kits to focus squarely on the PS4 and Xbox One. But evidence would suggest otherwise - there's still plenty for 'old-gen' gamers to look forward to...

Lightning Returns Final Fantasy 13 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 at GAME

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII

Release Date: 11/02/2014

For diehard FF fans, this latest installment is more important than any next gen console. Making big promises about its new combat system and increased levels of customisation, this quaint of tale of planetary armageddon features the ever popular Lightning as she lives out the end of days (two weeks to be precise) before the world is destined to stutter out forever. Sound grim? Fret not because the game's shot through with the kind of kookiness we adore about the series.

Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 at GAME

Castlevania: Lord of Shadow 2

Release Date: 27/02/2014

You may have already teased yourself by playing the official demo that was included with last year's Castlevania: Lords of Shadow Collection. No doubt then you'll be desperate to get back to this reboot of the classic vampire franchise that sees you controlling Dracula, desperate to quash his immortality and shed his superpowers. Alas, life's never simple for bloodsuckers (or videogamers) and it's up to you to unleash the forces of hell to, erm, crush evil. If that make sense. Never mind - all you need to know is that the sequel is packed with third-person action plus even more epic locations and boss fights. Job done.

South Park The Stick of Truth for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 at GAME

South Park: The Stick of Truth

Release Date: 07/03/2014

Warning - this game features foul language, delicious satire and a kid called Kenny being killed repeatedly. Yes, the comedy role-playing game based on the infamous and thoroughly brilliant South Park is finally on the verge of being released. Featuring the series' iconic 2D look, you take the boys on a quest to the Inn of the Giggling Donkey to seize the Stick of Truth from the Bard. Combat is turn-based (and hilarious - nothing beats a flatulence attack), and you can expect the game to be 100% authentic. Why? Because it's been scripted by the show's creators. Fingers crossed that this is the best TV tie-in since The Walking Dead. Or at the very least the rudest tie-in evah.

Dark Souls II for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 at GAME

Dark Souls II

Release Date: 14/03/2014

The 'World's Toughest Game Series' returns with many proclaiming that this could well be the swansong to adventure games on the last gen - if true, then it's going out in blinding form. Well, blinding fury actually. Because as fans will know, FromSoftware's insta-death approach to its Souls' series is notoriously hard. But with more nuanced third-person gameplay plus a much improved covenant system, the allure of fighting your way inch by inch, kill by kill, across the sprawling map (twice as big as the first game) is simply too good an offer to pass up on. Embrace your inner masochist.
