Just because the Xbox One is available doesn't mean Microsoft plans to sunset its Xbox 360 console anytime soon. In fact, the system will play host to a variety of potentially great titles throughout the year, including a retro-inspired dungeon crawler, a spin-off to one of the most beloved RPG franchises of all time and one adventure that seeks to return to the roots of survival horror. That said, here are the five Xbox 360 games we're most looking forward to.

Players in search of a challenge met their match with the original Dark Souls, a third person hack-and-slash action game that channelled the extreme difficulty from classic dungeon crawlers. Now, after absorbing extreme punishment at the hands of different monsters, gamers will line up for more in this highly anticipated sequel, which manages to deliver more of the same brutality. Once again, they'll plunge into a series of dangerous environments, pitting their skills against unforgiving enemies that for the most part tower over their puny, armour-clad warriors. This time, however, they'll enjoy improved character animations, new weapons and armour abilities, superior player progression and the most intriguing feature yet, hallucinations and phobias that may rip their fragile minds apart. Prepare to die again.

Lionhead Studios' original Fable helped define Microsoft's Xbox, thanks to its beautiful open world and myriad of choices that affected a person's standing with the various non-player characters he or she encountered. Both companies will celebrate the game with this splendid Anniversary edition, which not only includes the first adventure we fell in love with a decade ago, but also upgraded graphics and audio, Xbox Live achievements, The Lost Chapters expansion and even SmartGlass support, which allows players to check maps, artwork and missions from their smartphones and tablets. With all of this at their fingertips, gamers will set out to become a heroic adventurer or outcast. Over the course of the journey, they'll own a home, get married and affect the lives of hundreds through their actions. Bottom line, we can't wait to re-experience this classic game later this year.

Fans in need of a break from typical role-playing fare should delve into the world of Lightning Returns, the action RPG and direct sequel to Final Fantasy XIII-2. Playing as Lightning, they set off to save the world of Nova Chrysalia 13 days before its destruction. Against their adversaries, they'll make use of special abilities to devastate enemies and the Counterblow system to repel attacks while effortlessly climbing and swinging through this highly interactive world. Later, they'll manage time using the game's day/night cycle, where opponents grow more aggressive in the evenings; some characters and missions will only be available at specific times. Meanwhile, changing outfits not only alters Lightning's appearance, but also her different powers. All of this should give long-time Final Fantasy supporters something to dig into until the next chapter.

By now, almost everyone has played PopCap's critically acclaimed strategy game, Plants vs. Zombies. Now it's time for something much different. Garden Warfare is a competitive multiplayer game featuring 24-person match-ups. Choose between the good-natured plants or the brain-munching zombies and wage war across 10 distinct maps. Personalise your character with different items and experiment with new plant and zombie types, each with their own weapons and abilities, like the Engineer zombie's concrete launcher and the All-Star zombie's football cannon. Need a break from the versus mode? Team up with three friends for some co-op. Throw in a heavy dose of humour, and there's plenty to like about this unique Xbox 360 title, which is also slated to arrive on Xbox One, complete with console exclusive features.

It's been a while since we played a game from Shinji Mikami, the talented designer behind Capcom's Resident Evil. That changes in 2014 with arrival of this twisted tale. Playing as Detective Sebastian Castellanos, gamers will wander through a twisted environment filled with terrifying monsters. Fighting for survival, they'll not only combat Mikami's vicious creations, but also a world where walls and doors change on the fly, giving way to diabolical traps players can avoid and then use against their pursuers. Just don't expect to have a lot of weapons at your disposal. The game's lack of resources will help heighten anxiety and tension, while at the same time forcing you to plot your next move. We suggest running, because from what we've seen, there are few places to hide.
