Review Roundup: Forza Motorsport 5

Racing games and console launches go together like bacon and eggs. With its combination of speedy thrills and shiny polish, what better genre to show off your new hardware? That's certainly the thinking behind Xbox One exclusive Forza Motorsport 5, which updates the evergreen racing series for the next generation. But is it worth hitting the road for?

"An outstanding improvement to an already excellent racing franchise," is what Gamespot has to say in its 9/10 review. "It's far more than just a great racing sim, or a gorgeous showcase for the types of feats the Xbox One hardware is capable of. This is a game built on the romantic thrill of motorsport in all its forms, and that love for its subject matter is all but impossible to resist."

Polygon also gives the game 9/10. "Forza 5 is beautiful, sure, with a stunning, light-filled world of engines and tire smoke," reads the review. "But with the introduction of aggressive, convincing AI that makes every offline race feel like a multiplayer competition, Turn 10 has charted a course for the future of the series - and created the Xbox One's first must-own game."

There's a 9/10 from Videogamer as well. "You will show off your Xbox One with Forza 5," says the review right at the start, but it too goes on to praise the game for the way the Drivatar system changes the game from sleek simulation to a more visceral experience. "Drivatar learns the way you and every player drives, taking that data and applying it to AI opponents, making every race feel unique. No longer will you smash your way into first place and coast along; drivers aggressively look to regain position, bump you off the road and refuse to concede simply because you are on the racing line."

There are some scores around the 7/10 mark, mostly focussed on the lower number of tracks and cars compared to Forza 4, but the general consensus is that Microsoft has created a truly next gen racer - both in looks and muscle. Rev it up.

Forza Motorsport 5 launches on November 22nd, alongside the Xbox One.
