We can't get enough of super heroes; wherever you look, there are beefy men dressed in spandex, glaring back at us from movie posters and magazine covers while clutching Natalie Portman and/or a big hammer.
LEGO Marvel Super Heroes takes this insatiable appetite for all things super-powered to new heights with its own open-world tribute available on a host of platforms. Thankfully for LEGO, the Marvel canon is a perfect match for its humour; from Joss Whedon's sometimes hilarious Avengers Assemble last year to Tony Stark's razor-sharp quipping in Iron Man 3, the laugh-out loud moments come thick and fast - as they do in LEGO Marvel Super Heroes.
The game sees you taking on the roles of pretty much every Marvel superhero you can imagine - from the Hulk, Spider-Man, Iron Man and Wolverine to Captain America, the Invisible Woman and Moon Knight (who he? - Ed), newbies will delight in discovering previously unknown heroes and their back stories, while Marvel veterans will be bowled over by the sheer breadth of the game's encyclopedic-like character roster.
With this mass of superheroes at your disposal, you're charged with facing off against Marvel's biggest villains (an epic list as well, trust us) as you each race to locate the 'Cosmic Bricks' made up from the pieces of the Silver Surfer's shattered surfboard. This means action-packed third-person gameplay as you run, swing, leap and fly your way across the streets and locales of LEGO Manhattan plus a host of iconic locations including Stark Tower, Asteroid M and the X-Mansion.
So far, so generous then. But the real thrill of LEGO Marvel Super Heroes is in the breathless nature of the missions themselves - chopping and changing from characters on the fly (sometimes literally) adds a heady thrill and imaginative variety to the core gameplay. And all this is inevitably wrapped up in Marvel-worshipping good looks and audio with each LEGO character expertly rendered, scripted and voiced.
With its host of side missions, secrets and knowing references, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes is a feature-packed experience that blends pitch-perfect fan service with incorruptible, righteous gameplay at its very core. S.H.I.E.L.D. would be proud.
